You'll see lottery chances written two ways. They describe the same thing, just from different angles.
Probability
Probability compares winning outcomes to all outcomes. A Pick 4 straight play has a probability of 1 in 10,000, or 0.01%.
Odds
Odds compare losing outcomes to winning ones. For the same Pick 4 play, the odds against winning are 9,999 to 1.

Why it matters
Lotteries usually print "1 in X", which is probability. Either way, the number stays the same no matter how you choose your numbers.
